P3 Security Drohne

Drones are currently spreading rapidly and have a wide range of applications across all sectors. The big question here is what relevance will drones have for private security companies in Germany in the future? A scientifically sound technical article by our authorized signatory ANJA TYROLLER, first published in the current issue of the trade magazine DSD “DER SICHERHEITSDIENST” 2/2021.

Although the personnel employed in the private security industry is still one of the key success factors, technology is also advancing inexorably here. Access systems, video surveillance, intruder and fire alarm systems have long been standard security technology. Drones are a special technology that is currently undergoing rapid development across all sectors and has the potential to expand the range of security technology in the future.

In the simplest sense, drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that are either remote-controlled by humans, semi-autonomous or autonomously computer-controlled.[1] When used for commercial purposes, they are referred to as unmanned aerial systems by official bodies such as authorities.[2]

According to one of the most recent and comprehensive analyses of the German drone market, a study by the Hamburg-based Drone Industry Insights Institute, there were more than 430,000 drones in circulation in Germany in 2020 – around 45,000 of which were used commercially. The top fields of application in the commercial sector include: surveying (79%), inspection (53%), film and photography (35%), mapping and observation (33%), data collection (15%) and transportation (5%). The reasons given for using drones for surveying, inspection and mapping purposes are that they save time and increase low margins, productivity and quality in these very labor-intensive and sometimes dangerous fields of application.[3] These reasons can be directly transferred to the fields of application in the security industry.

Further strong growth in commercial use is expected in the coming years. By 2025, 132,000 commercial drones are expected to be in use in Germany[4]. This growth can be explained by the fact that drones are becoming cheaper and cheaper to purchase, increasingly easier to control and are being recognized as useful for more and more commercial applications. In addition, data collection and analysis in particular are gaining in quantity and quality. The potential for innovation in cameras, sensors and measurement technology is also far from exhausted.

Forecast development of the drone market in Germany

This decade will therefore not only see a sharp increase in the number of drones in use, but above all the number of different applications and uses. Due to the increasing importance of drones in commercial use, security companies need to get to grips with drones and examine whether and for which security tasks the use of drones will have a positive impact on the company’s success.
